Chapter Two — Paradise Lost

In the summer of 2024, Matthew's heart began to give out.

Congestive heart failure, the doctors said — and then a word heavier than any stone he had ever lifted: hospice. Hospice is where you go to die with comfort. He went. And dying, he learned, can take forever.

The morphine came in waves. It dulled the pain and stole the hours, and some days he could not tell whether he was fighting the illness or fighting the fog. A living hell of dying forever: the body failing by inches, the mind still strong, watching it happen.

Everyone who has read Milton knows how paradise is lost. Not all at once. By degrees. By an enemy you cannot see.

But here is what the doctors did not write in the chart: the man in the hospice bed did not die.

He lived.
